What Is Harp Therapy?

Written accounts from ancient times tell of the harp being used as a healing tool. The one we are most familiar with is the story of David in the court of King Saul recorded in the Bible, where David is brought in to play for King Saul and soothe his troubled nerves.

Harp therapy was also used in the court of Queen Elizabeth I for the same purpose.

More recently, the harp is being used as a tool for alternative therapies; the soft, gentle music almost magically helping to relax, sooth and comfort a variety of patients including people suffering from severe injuries, brain injuries, Alzheimers, premature babies and for comforting people in comas or with terminal illnesses.

THE THERAPEUTIC EFFECT OF HARP

Throughout History the healing effect of music on human behavior has been well documented:

  • The Greeks,Indian cultures, Africans, European,,Native Americans and Aboriginal have all used music in their healing rituals..

  • In Ancient Times Pythagoras used music as medicine for himself and others

  • The East Indians believed that music is a manifestation of God and therefore is a healing force.

  • The most well known use of the Harp as an instrument of healing is found in the Bible in 1 Samuel,16.Here the young David played the Harp to help to soothe the tired, depressed, irate King Saul.,

Therapeutic Harp Music is a non-invasive approach that has been shown to help to change behaviour and enhance coping skills such as socialization,self-expression and communication.

The healing effect of Harp Music can be experienced both by the listener and by the person playing.

Within the last ten years the acknowledgement of music as a therapeutic tool has been gaining more credibility. This interest is helped by our search for alternative, holistic and natural compliments to modern medical treatment.

The increase in the numbers of research studies validating the effect of music on behavior has helped to bring awareness of music as Medicine to the forefront of alternative health treatments.

The Harp, once considered to be the instrument much regarded by the Greek deities,Medieval Kings, elite or affluent,is now more accessible to most people who choose to experience its magical vibrations.

The vibrations of Harp Music promotes a sense of calm and relaxation to both player and listener, this helps the body to relax thus facilitating the healing process of both mind and body.

Scientific Studies show that music affects the body's physiological responses such as Respiration,heart-rate and blood pressure. The music enters the Brain and the Lymbic System which controls blood pressure, temperature, responses to pleasure and pain and emotions.Memory is also triggered by music.

In study done at the University of California Irvine found that Alzheimers patients who listened to a Mozart Piano Sonata showed much improvement in their memory test scores

In a study from Miami School of Medicine 1999, it was shown that Music had a relaxing effect on Patients with Alzheimers Disease.

Researchers believe that the chemicals Endorphins and Dopamine are released when one experiences pleasure. The release of these Chemicals causes one to relax thus facilitating the healing process.
