- Once my site is finished how much does it cost to have it hosted on the internet?
A: Once your site is completed, you have a variety of options. The first is to put it on your own server (Usually a separate computer with a web server program).
To do this you would usually want a fast, constant 24/7 connection to the internet so your site is always available to people who want to get to it. This can be costly and either you or someone else must maintain everything. Large companies do this as it gives them direct control over their site and they have the resources to hire people for this specific job.
A second option is to arrange to have your site put up on someone elses server. Here you are normally renting space on their server (Much like you would rent a spot of land to put up a billboard on the highway). The cost for this varies greatly and deals and arrangements abound. For some examples CLICK HERE.
A third option is available to customers of Ponoka Online Webservices. They can choose to have their site hosted on the PonokaOnline site if they wish. The cost is very economical. Some conditions apply to this offer so please read our SITE HOSTING POLICIES page.
NOTE: In any of these scenarios we will do the actual posting of your site (i.e. - Getting it up and running on the web server) for no extra charge if you would like us to do that for you.
- What do I do if I want to change something on my site once it has been up and running?
A: To change something on your site it is much like changing something on the highway billboard. Either you would do this or else you would hire someone else to do it.
If you choose either of the first two site hosting options above, both of these options are available to you. Should you wish professional assistance to manage your site, we (Ponoka Online ) would be very happy to look after this for you.
Should you choose the third web hosting option (Have your site hosted on the PonokaOnline site), fortunately or unfortunately the only way to change something on it would be to hire us to do it for you. This is primarily for security reasons. We could not allow numerous parties to have access and stand the risk of someone either inadvertently or deliberately causing damage to the main site (or yours).
Should you be needing only a small, low-cost website it may be wise to put information on it that can remain static (unchanged) for a long time. Then you would incur no extra costs until changes are required.
- Do I need to purchase a Domain Name for my site?
A: A Domain Name is a unique internet name for your site (i.e. www.PonokaOnline.com). Once someone has registered a domain name no one else in the world is allowed to copy the entire name exactly (Kind of like a telephone number). If you want one of these unique names you need to first check to see if the name you wish is available, and then, if still available, apply to register it for yourself. This can all be done in one step.
Names which end in .com are rapidly being taken ( at a present rate of approximately 10,000 per week). Names which end in .net or .org are more available. If you are considering registering a domain name and one you like is still available, it may be prudent to grab it while you can.
The going rate for Domain Name registration is about $35.00 (U.S.) per year. The prime provider for this service is a company called NetworkSolutions, but there are others as well. For example, one company right in Edmonton does the same thing for $13.50 (U.S) per year. CLICK HERE if you would like to check that company out.
Domain Names can also be worth some money if you are lucky enough to own one someone else prizes and is willing to buy from you. CLICK HERE to get an idea of how this works.
Should you get your own Domain Name your internet address would be something like www.YourDomainName.com.
Should you choose the option of having your site hosted in the PonokaOnline site, your internet address might look something like www.PonokaOnline.com/YourCompanyName (example).
- What are the advantages of being linked to PonokaOnline.com?
A: PonokaOnline.com was created to provide our customers a distinct advantage on the internet - a directory site with a related, easy to remember name where their site can be found.
Many web sites have a serious problem in that they could only obtain a name that is difficult for a larger audience to find them by and/or remember easily. The greatest site in the world won't do you much good if only a few people can find it.
When your site is linked to PonokaOnline.com, the name of your site doesn't matter. All you have to tell your clients is "You can find us by going to PonokaOnline.com".
PonokaOnline.com is continually striving to add new links and features that will attract a larger audience than just our local community. Examples of this are the Online Classifieds, Online photo Ads and the coordination between Ponoka Online, Wetaskiwin Online, and Ponoka Online. This means your site has the potential to be viewed by many, many more viewers than if it was out on the web by itself.
In addition, Ponoka Online has been designed to give an additional search engine boost to websites listed within it. This can sometimes mean a considerable difference in a website's rank, especially for sites which are properly designed and coded for search engine indexing.
- Once I have my site built, is there a monthly or annual charge for being linked to PonokaOnline.com?
A: Listings in the Ponoka Businesses index are fee based. Listings which qualify for and are placed in the municipal or community organizations categories are free as long as an acceptable return link to Ponoka Online is placed on that website. If you have your site built by Ponoka Online Webservices, a free one-year listing is generally included in the package.
- I already have a site. Is there any charge to have my site linked to PonokaOnline?
A: That would depend on the type of site you have. Most non-profit organizations can apply to be linked to PonokaOnline at no charge, provided they provide an acceptable reciprocal link. Business sites can choose from several excellent listing options for a low annual fee. For details, you can contact us by Clicking Here
NOTE: Websites which provide a link back to PonokaOnline.com are normally placed higher in a category than those without.
By using this policy (encouraging return links) it helps everyone. Viewers might find you by way of coming to PonokaOnline.com through an unrelated link on someone elses site, and visa versa. This can mean more viewers and customers coming to Ponoka.

- Do you allow any type of site to be linked?
A: No. PonokaOnline.com reviews every application and also reserves the right to refuse or unlink any site, at any time, for any reason.
